An Off-Broadway play that is gathering momentum is “The Holy Junkie” by John Quinn at the American Theater of Actors, 314 W. 54th’ St. It runs Tuesdays through Sundays at 8 p.m., with a 3 p.m. matinee on Saturdays and Sundays. Quinn wrote the play after spending eight years in the lower depths of drug addiction.
“I got started in the 1960s,” said Quinn, “when the myth was that drugs would help you find your real self. After two bad acid trips in which I regressed to a 3year-old child, I entered Daytop Village.” Quinn, who started out as an actor, said he used a variety of drugs including, acid, cocaine, heroin, thorazine and pot. “The purpose of the play,” said Quinn, “is to show that people can get straight and stay straight. But it is not easy. I wrote the play for all the ones I know who are making it.
They are the people I call holy.” The play is directed by James Jennings with Mike Halata, Jane Culley and James Nixon in the cast.
