Memory is as persistent and unreliable as Salvador Dali’s drooping clocks (still hanging and drooping at MoMA). We revise our past to suit our present view of ourselves. We idealize the highlights and edit the scenes that make us uncomfortable; sort of like a “director’s cut” of an old movie. But the past is a tough customer and refuses to behave. Restless and whimsical it comes forward, uninvited and unannounced, to make nonsense of the present. Like a jazz riff in an unlikely time signature you can’t tap your feet to it.
In After Zero, set during the jingle-jangle morning of the aughts, time and space remain fluid. Past and present eddy and swirl around the lives of four sad, funny, souls. Cataclysmic events may dance on the peripheries but in the end everything is personal. Boundaries, even between death and life, seem negotiable. And in the supple mind of a young girl, the only truth to be found in the muddled world of deranged adults resides in the possibility of an Angel, and the beautiful immutability of Zero.
